4. Critical Thinking

Examine the statement:  Think about a work situation where you can visualize a viable scenario for the following statement:
“Each adult person has the potential to control the direction of their own lives.”
Give two examples when this is not true.  How might the circumstances be altered  to make it true?  Think of the situation from the opposite point of view.  Give an example.  Then  give an example of what might alter that situation.
Write your response to this Critical Thinking prompt in 75-100 words.

  1. “Each adult person has the potential to control the direction of their own lives.” A work situation where this may not be true is when you are let go from your job. The best way you might alter the circumstances is if you are able to perform another job for that employer. If you were to look at this from the opposite point of view, you left your job. You may alter that situation by staying employed where you are and moving to another position.
Another example where the above statement is not true would be asking for a raise. The best way you might alter the circumstances is if you waited to be given a raise when due. Now if you were never offered a raise, you might alter that situation by showing your employer how valuable you are to the company.

  2. An example would be if a nurse was told that they would have to move to another state to work in another area for their job and they were told that they would get a promotion if they did relocate for the other job. But if they did not relocate they would stand a chance of losing their job since they have too many nurses in this area. The state is far away from the nurse’s family and she cannot afford to move her family to another state. This example can be altered to make the statement “each adult person has the potential to control the direction of their own lives” true by taking a chance on losing her job and finding a job somewhere else.
Another example would be if an employees job consisted of doing a test that has to be done the same way over and over without changing it up, because they were told by their boss that this is how it has to be done and this is the only way, because if you do it any other way you will get severely hurt. This example can be altered to make the statement “each adult person has the potential to control the direction of their own lives” true by finding or researching for a different way to do the same test but a way that is more safely.

  3. There are certain circumstances in our lives that we should be able to control. " Each adult has the potential to control and direct their own lives" especially at workplace. Our behavior is one thing that we should be able to control at workplace, because workplace is a place where we should behave professionally. Self behavior also express our traits and who we are. However, there are certain circumstances that we have no control over at work. !) Rules and regulations 2) Procedure. These are the guideline that we have to follow. The only ways to alter the situation to change the way we think, to take control. An example of taking control of situation may possibly lead to a promotion of position. If To alter this situation may be a possibly lead into a demotion.

  4. A work situation you cannot control would be a performance review. Since you are not the one that writes the review you have to take what is said. You may not agree with what is said but you have two choices. You can quit or you can listen to the constructive criticism and work on fixing those problems. There are things that are hard to hear and no one likes to hear bad things about themselves. If the review is based on factual information such as lateness or calling in sick a lot, these are things that need to be worked on. If the manager says you have a bad attitude then you need to ask them to be more specific and give examples so you know what to work on.
Another work situation you may not have control over is dealing with customer issues. A manager makes a decision to do something for a customer that you don’t agree with. This can make you very angry because you had to deal with the customer first and they weren’t nice to you and the manager gives them their way. People tend to feel the manager has no respect for them because they took care of business and didn’t back up the employee. The manager is also in a situation because it is their job to keep the customer coming back or it can cost them their job as well.

  5. I can think of a couple of instances where this example is not true. For example, there are many situations in life that are beyond our control. For example, in the workplace whether or not you lose your job can sometimes be out of your control because if the company closes or downsizes you could be a casualty of a layoff. This happens to people all of the time. If it was altered, you could think of that you would still be working there. Also you can’t always control how your circumstances work out. An example of that is in my experience, where I tried to apply for a Web Developer for a job for three years, I thought that I would be hired eventually, but apparently that did not happen and nothing really worked out the way I had planned. While I was putting in the effort, there were simply too many decisions by other people that I could not control and so that decisions were not mine to be made. If the decisions were altered, I would probably be working at a company right now as a Web Developer instead of a student at Bryant & Stratton. But the opposite point of view of that is that, well I should have tried harder or did something different. But sometimes that is not always possible. I would alter that viewpoint by saying that the experience at Bryant & Stratton has allowed me to continue learning new things and be ready for the world today, and if that means adjusting my life goal to survive and that is what I am going to do.

  6. "Each adult has the potential to control and direct their own lives" while in the work place. While that is true in most cases a scenario where it is not true is the hiring process. With the way the economy is today buisness are getting stricter with guidlines in regards to whom the employe. Professional buisnesses look for the person with the most education and perferable more experince. Even then might not guarentee an employee a postition. Now a days theres the factor of "who you know, not what you know," that comes into play. With the choices being harder on employers they resort to networking. Someone is more likely to hire someone they have been aquainted with then over someone they don't know. I have been hired for two different jobs in my working career soley based off of my fathers reputation. It was nothing I did. My employers did not know me, but because they knew my father they hired me. Another situation where that statement is not true is if someone is let go. Because the economy is so hard buisness have been forced to lay off employees. A couple ways to change that is work hard and make a reputation for yourself and don't burn bridges with previouse employers. There are things we can and cannot control in our life. Its what we do with the situation that makes us the type of person we are.

  7. An example of of this statement would be if you were getting laid off. It's a tricky situation because you can collect unemployment and receive far less than you what you were currently earning at your place of employment. So do you stick around and collect unemployment and wait for your previous job to open back up? Or do you go a different route and try to find another employer that can hire you for a similar job. The economy is tough right now and choosing wrong could put you in a very bad situation.

  8. Two work situations where adults do not have control are controlling the actions of coworkers and getting fired from the job. There is not much that can be done to control the action of others; one way to derive an effect is to change ourselves and how we interact with coworkers. When a person gets fired two options are they can file for unemployment or search for a new job. An example from management would be firing an employee. A way to change this may be moving the employee to another position or giving a suspension to bring about a change.

  9. Each adult person has the potential to control the direction of their own lives, but when it comes to the workplace there are a few things that are out of our control, personal reviews are tough, they are based on another person's opinion of how you complete the assigned tasks. Becuase no two people do them same job the exact same way there is room for them to critize you. Also you can't control if you continue to even have the job you work in, there are so many outside factors at play that you as an employee have no say over. You just have to know what is expected of you and do the best job you can.

  10. an example of not controling your life would be to get laid off at work company is losing money needs to let people go. this could also give that person a change to go back to school change their career or advance themselves in the career they are already in. when being laid off you can get unemployement. With all this happening this could change your life for the better. another example is a person gets into a really bad car accident and is permantly disable, this is something where you can not work again and your life plans come to a stop and your career and dreams you may of have are no longer there. an example of someone being able to control what is happening in their lives is being fired from a job. This can be controled because that person may not be performing their job duties, being late all the time or calling in for no reasons. that can be controlled by getting themselves together and trying to keep thier job by doing more effort in their career.

  11. An example of when the quote is not true is, you are told you cannot leave work on your lunch, because you are the only supervisor on duty. A way to make it true is, make sure you take your lunch when there is another supervisor on duty. If you were to look at it in the opposing point of view, you get to have a lunch and eat, smoke, and not wait on customers. You can alter that situation by not taking your lunch when another supervisor is there.
Another example is when your boss tells you you’re being moved to another department at your job without asking you. A way to make the statement true is to either ask for a transfer or quit. The opposing view is, it shouldn’t matter what department you work in as long as you’re working. You can alter this situation by refusing to move to the other department.

  12. “Each adult person has the potential to control the direction of their own lives” This statement is not always true, in the case of being fired or the spread of rumors about you. The circumstances that can alter this statement to make it true are that you could quit before you are fired. And in the case of the spread of rumors you can claim harassment if it sever. Opposing point of view instead of getting fired or quitting you can fight the termination. An example of this would be to file an EEOC claim. To alter this situation would to be to lose the case.

  13. The statement, “Each adult person has the potential to control the direction of their own lives” is not necessarily always true. As adults, we should be able to make decisions for ourselves in the direction our life takes us, but in some cases, it is not controllable. For example, I was let go from my last job, not for something that I did wrong, but due to the poor economy, I ended up being let go, along with three others. With that said, instead of not doing anything about it, after I lost my job, I took that as an opportunity to return to school. In that aspect, I am happy that I was thrown that curve ball, because in the long run it will benefit me and be able to advance in the medical field. In that situation, I could not control it, but I was the one who chose the career and enjoyed it very much. In another situation in the workplace, the person can have issues completing a task a certain way, as instructed by the boss, but still have to do them to conformity as requested by the boss.

  14. Someone being able to control the direction of their own life can be true or not depending on the situation. For instance, when it comes to your job, you can not control what happens to the company itself. The company may go into bankruptcy and you may lose your job. The company may have to lay off people due to a lack of funds or business. Retail is always questionable since your hours revolve around the season. What you can control in these situations is your attitude in the work place and how hard you work. If an employer sees that you are a great asset to that company they may give someone a high recommendation about you and you may easily be able to jump into a new company rather then have nothing. With hours in retail, the harder you work, the more hours you may get. Another example is death, not that I'm trying to sound morbid or anything but you can't really hide from it. You can take care of yourself and do everything right but death will still come knocking at your door. The only thing you have any control over in this situation is how well your take care of yourself and making yourself live a longer life.
