9. Media: Meaningful or Madness?

The outlets of information seem increasingly limitless—it’s not just Diane Sawyer  or David Letterman broadcasting facts or conjecture over airwaves.  Virtually anyone with access to  Internet  can reach out and connect with millions of others.  Obviously that can be very good, very bad and everything in-between.  Chapter 11 offers some challenging observations about this relatively new social phenomena. Read through the sub-topics and choose a section that interests you.  Write about it and how it relates to your interests. 75-100 words.

  1. The subtopic that I chose to discuss is “Impact of the Internet on Daily Life.” This subtopic discusses how the internet is important in our everyday lives and how it has a strong impact on our daily life. I chose this subtopic because what it discusses is true. We do use the internet a lot in one day. We check face book, pay bills, and do many other things online. The internet has given us another way of doing things. We can do a variety of things online that makes it not necessary for a TV or a radio in the house, all you need is a device that has an internet connection.

  3. Misuse of the internet: Pornography and Plagiarism
Being I am a person that uses the internet often, and also have a 13 year old son that loves the internet, I relate to this topic very much. My son is a special needs child that is also a self- taught learner by using the internet. He is on it all the time, but the good thing is, with him he has his specific interest and that is the only thing he looks up. But there is the problem that when he searches something, you never know what is going to come up as the search result. Being I am a student myself, plagiarism is a huge concern in my education. I have done many papers since starting school, and have many more to write, and I do not mean to plagiarize, but sometimes I do not correctly site information used. I do believe that siting has been taken to an unnecessary level, as long as you have the website where you found the information, that should be good enough. In the end I do try to do it in APA guidelines, but even after two semesters this is still very difficult. There are too many ifs, ands, and exceptions.

  4. Confirmation Bias: The News Media – I believe that media is politically biased and networks such as FOX News report news that is not really facts but misinformation and I can see how it has moved far to the right. The bias also tries to paint news stories in the most negative light possible and is not afraid to say anything to get people to watch the news or read an article on the Internet. A lot of people believe all of the things that they see on television or on the Internet. However, it is not necessarily true because it is in a news article or on television. Also the media including newspapers and television networks are owned by giant corporate owners who have political biases as well, and these are then passed down to the newspaper or television network. As a critical thinker it is important to be skeptical and not to always believe everything you hear or everything that you read.

  5. Sara Hilton,
I think it is crazy the amounts of media pouring into our daily lives. I read the subtitle the rise of Mass Media. It was interesting. I did not know that niche media which is geared to a narrowly defined audience or specific demographics of a group of people. They specifically target the group of people for the information/ product they went to show that group. I think its nuts that corporations control whats on the radio/ tv rather than family or educational. I think there is to much media available at our finger tips. On my smart phone alone I can access my yahoo/ Google emails. Along with my Bryant and Stratton email, Google, Youtube, yahoo, and have apps to play games. After hearing someones power point on Mass media in class the fact that tv networks limited the amount of advertisements during kid shows. I can't remember what the limit was, but it was still a staggering amount. I agree that people have the right to say what they want, but maybe the tv and internet should be regulated better by the networks. That's just my opinion anyways.

  6. I chose the topic Social Networking. This is a very scary topic when you think about how much information we give away about ourselves without even knowing it. There are very few people who do not have a Facebook page. I actually happen to be one of them. I see pictures of people doing things they shouldn’t be doing and these things don’t get erased. Today employers and colleges look at these things to see what kind of a person you really are. Things are posted in haste and once you have time to think about what you said or posted, it is already too late. Depending on how many Facebook friends you have it could be passed on to hundreds of people in 30 minutes or less. Then there is no way to take it back. I think people have gone overboard with these phenomena and don’t know how to stop. It has become a disease and there seems to be no way to stop it. There are people who are addicted to Facebook and spend hours just checking out what others are doing. I personally enjoy my privacy and I choose not to have a Facebook page.

  7. I picked impact of the internet on daily life. The internet has become a impact on our lives in the past 10 years. Is this really a good thing. Although the internet has created new jobs, college students spend more time on the internet then studying. The internet is becomeing something of normal life but is it good for our childeren, they would rather be on the computer and video games then be outside playing. Are we all becomeing lazy of this internet. The internet allows us to shop, research, talk to family far away, read books, watch movies, listen to music. I feel that soon or later we will no longer have raidos or paper books.

  8. I think the internet is very good example. The mountain of information is high. But the validity of the information is always open for question. When doing a reseearch paper we've been taught how to try and weed out the good site and the non-trust worthy sites. BUt unless we spend hours actually research the people and source they use as well we truly will never know if the information we've read is accurate.

  9. I am choosing social networking. This is because I am a Facebook user, but I am very careful of what I post and what I don't. I think it is important to be able to keep in touch with people from your past, that you choose to, but it can also be very unsafe. In many cases, there is an age limit that a person has to be in order to make a page, but in many cases, people lie. That is the trouble with the internet, you cannot believe everything that you hear or see as a result of the internet. In the past, there have been homes targeted of people who have posted comments about going out of town for a certain length of time, and the person returns home from vacation to find that there has been a home invasion and there is nothing left in their house. This is why it is important to monitor what is being posted on the internet, as well as what your children write. You never know what kind of information a person can compile from little hints that people may post online. Even pictures can cause issues. If you have a Facebook page, you should be tactful as to what is being posted on your page. Some people have photographs of illegal activities or other things that do not portray an image that potential employers or public safety members want to see. A lot of trouble can be started with having a social networking page, so it is crucial to monitor every move that is made, as well as only posting things that you WANT people to know about you. The internet is very public, no matter how “private” you set a page, there are still hackers and bad people out there that will do everything they can to get past the attempted protection.

  10. I chose the topic of Social Networking. I have a Facebook account to stay in contact with my friends from all the way back from grade school up to new friends that I have made in college. I only post pictures of what I believe are appropriate such as of my children and of family outings. I at times post comments that I think are funny that may offend some. So I know I have to be a little more careful of what I do say! I believe that the youth of today do not critically think about what they post and consider the consequences of their postings. Some of the issues that arise from Facebook are bullying, racy pictures and inappropriate comments.

  11. Technology has been a wide broadcasting for some decades; internet is one of the fastest growing technologies that changed the lives of many. Internet has the big impacts in our society; in fact, it became our daily routine that delivered fast access from paying bills to stay in touch with families and friends, not just that, the benefit of internet used is farther better beyond our expectation with just from the touch of our fingers tips. Internet has become the world broadcast; it provides many advantages that improved our lives in many ways. Although, internet provides many benefits in our lives but if we not careful, it can also be a bad device that can manipulate our mind. Because internet provides the access to all kind of sources, it could be harmful to some people especially to the young adults. The exposure of internet such as social network, may lead to a distraction for some individuals; in fact, damage has already done in some individual’s lives. The addiction of internet has changed many lives in a negative ways; the danger of internet addiction may have the same impacts as some other addiction such as drugs, alcohol or nicotine used.

  12. Bias in the news is prevalent in most of the regular broadcast channels and cable network channels. There is only one channel that tries to keep a balance politically. That is Fox Network and their slogan is “fair and balanced”. This does not mean that they succeed all the time, but at least they make a concerted effort. The best way to keep a balanced approach on an individual basis is to watch, read, and listen to several sources. This section also touched on gender bias in the news. I do not see that as a big issue. Over time more and more women are getting into news as reporters and anchors. The questions are, is this because women have been excluded from these positions because of gender, is it just taking time to evolve from a male predominate profession, or is there a lack of women wanting to be in broadcast news? Just stating that a bias exists without looking at all the facts leads to another bias. I spent time in radio broadcasting when I was younger and still hold some interest in this subject.
