5. Metacognition Exercise

Thinking About Thinking:  When people are asked for their viewpoints about a particular issue, many of them respond with elaborate (long and wordy) reasoning or argument(s).   WHY do you think this happens?  Give an example of a “hot topic” you may have explored recently.  What was your viewpoint on the topic? What was an opposing view?  Simplify a response to the opposing viewpoint.    75-100 words. 1. One hot topic that I have explored recently is abortion. Many people respond to this topic with elaborate long and wordy reasoning or argument because this is a very important topic. I do not believe in abortion, this is a living being growing inside of you. It is a gift from God that should not be flushed away. I have a lot of people who disagree with my view point. One reason I was given was “what if a women is raped and becomes pregnant”. I have never had this happen to me so I cannot even imagine how someone would feel, but I can say with certainty that I would not have an abortion. The baby is still a part of you and a living being. This baby growing inside of you did nothing wrong and deserve a chance to live. If you really do not want to keep the baby, there are many couples that are childless and would welcome a newborn into their homes.

  2. I think when people are asked for their viewpoints about a particular issue, and respond with a long reasoning it is because they either don not know what they are talking about or they are not able to say the right words that will make their reasoning short and to the point. An example that I explored recently was stem cell research. My viewpoint on stem cell research is that it should most definitely be allowed so that we can find possible cures for diseases if it is possible with stem cells. An opposing viewpoint would be that stem cell research should not be allowed since it requires the stem cells that are taken from embryos.

  3. People give long responses when giving their viewpoints because they believe that they need to justify it in some way. I also think that people are always trying to convince and persuade people to view the issue in their particular viewpoint. So it needs to be long and wordy so that they can try to convince the other person that their viewpoint is wrong if it is not the same viewpoint. A hot button issue or hot topic happening right now is the idea that “too many regulations inhibit job creation” has been a popular slogan argued by politicians recently. My viewpoint on that is that regulations are important to protect the citizens of this country from underhanded shady activities. The opposing viewpoint to regulation is that if we deregulate and eliminate regulations that more business will hire more workers. However the current state of the economy has everything to do with hiring, so instead of blaming regulations for reasons that businesses aren’t hiring, we need to look into the fact that economic uncertainty in today’s market as a reason that the job market is still weak and moving slowly.

  4. People give long and wordy explanations because they get caught up in things they have a strong opinion about and the more they rationalize their decision and explain their side they hope to get the person they are talking to, to agree with them. Most of the time they don’t really care what your opinion is, they really just wanted to be heard. One hot topic I just had a discussion about is reverse discrimination. We read an article about Syracuse firefighters and how they have to have so many minorities as firefighters and chiefs. The white males involved have gotten 95 or higher on the exams and have 25 – 30years experience in volunteer departments. The department is hiring minorities with no experience and scoring 75 on the exam. My view on this is the best most qualified person should be getting these jobs especially when lives are involved. The opposing view in short is there is too much discrimination in the workplace and the numbers need to show that hiring is based on non-discrimination policies.

  5. With any argument people often respond in lengthy responses to prove their view point. I do not think debates/ arguments are a reasonable response because both parties go in on the defense ready to tear the other person apart and find flaws in their arguments. When arguing people are already on defense so them listing to anything you say most likely won't happen. I've been taught that if I disagree with someone, be respectful, but at the same time reach the persons logical end point. Meaning a lot of times people have opinions because of how they were raised, personal experiences and morals. When you argue with them you’re not just attacking that stand point, but more or less attacking the person. It won’t be very productive. It’s much easier to try and relate to the person then attack them. A recent topic I heard about was the animal hospital that flooded and left the animals there to die. I find that disturbing. I know animals aren’t human, but I do believe that something should have been done to better protect those animals’ rights. I agree it is important to respect animals to a degree. But I do like to eat meat. So where that line is I'm not a 100% sure.

  6. I have been following the Republican Presidential primary debates. My opinion on some of the candidates is they need to quit bickering between themselves and explain where they stand on public issues. One of the issues being debated is troops in the Middle East. I believe the troops are doing their job and until other orders are given they are where they are supposed to be. Others believe that the troops should be removed immediately; simply put, bring our troops home now. People use elaborate words when explaining their viewpoints for two reasons one, they want to impress their listeners with how smart they are and two, they really do not know what they are talking about and want to hide that by being verbose.

  7. People responding with elaborate response when they come to a certain viewpoint of a particular issue, for one reason, disagreement. When someone disagrees with a particular issue, they tend to respond defensively as an argument. The idea of the response is to defend one side and to prove the other side wrong. For example, Animal research issue, I am strongly against the idea of using animals for experimentation. I believed that using animals for experimentation is immoral and cruel, especially for the benefit of humans. Animals have rights as beings just as us humans, although, they cannot express their thoughts or feelings, but they do have emotions, they can feel the suffering of loneliness and pain as much as humans do. As human beings, we have the right of consent to be used for experimentation purposes; however, animal can’t give consent to be use for research and experimentations purposes. An opposing viewpoint is using animals for experimentation does not prove the effective result on humans, because animals body and chemistry is different from humans, this isn’t just hurting the animals but we may be putting ourselves at risk of being harmed.

  8. People respond with lengthy arguments and complex words to try to confuse the opposition and make the focus on their vocabulary and dialect instead of the actual topic. The perception of being well educated in grammar gives the same perception on the topic being discussed. Euthanasia is a topic that I have recently been in discussion about. I feel that if someone is diagnosed with a terminal illness and carry a burden on their family and friends and willfully want to die, that is their right as a human-being. An opposing view would be that it is murder to take the life of another human, intention or unintentional. My response is that a human has natural rights to carry out his or her life in the way the choose, including their death.

  9. I think that people give wordy or lengthy explinations to get there points across, It could be a hot topic like abortion or even a small debate as to whether we should have government controled health insurance. People are going to have strong opinions especially for the side they stand on. It doesn't make either side right or wrong, people just need to keep a level head on their shoulders and listen to what all sides have to offer.

  10. I think people elaborate on a response or their opinion because they want to get you on their side or have you agree with them, if they explain them selves very well it could just happen. A debate that I was recently involved in was legalizing Marijuana, this becomes a conflict with alot of people. There are those like my self feel that it should be legalized for people that need it for health issues but other people say it is a addicting drug and is harmful. My thoughts are cigaretts, and alchol are both addicting and kill people and that seems to be legalize.

  11. I believe people respond like this due to wanting to make sure they get their viewpoint across. Usually we believe our view is the right view and yelling at least we think makes other people see our view.
A topic that I recently explored is when I was changing the water on my son’s salt water fish tank and I was going to put the new water in before the salt was completely dissolved and my son argued that I should not do that. I felt it was worse to keep the tank with 25% of the water gone, he felt it would hurt the fish if the salt was not completely dissolved. After we argued I let the water sit for about another hour to give it a little more time and then we put the water into the tank.

  12. People respond with elaborate long winded reasoning’s and arguments I believe to appear of greater intelligence. A hot topic that I recently explored was Reverse Discrimination in the workforce. My viewpoint is that there are no clear cut solutions to this problem and the same goes for there is no clear cut answers to the other side of the coin which is Affirmative Action. Each case has to be dealt as an individual case in order for it to be fair and just.

  13. A "hot topic" I am familiar with is the use of medicinal marijuana. I have done hours of research on said topic, and find that there are MANY different view points on it. Some opinions about it are that the people only want an excuse to use, or that they are lazy stoners; another view on the subject of medicinal marijuana is that they are for it, as am I. I beleive that there are many medical attributions for severely or terminally ill patients. Either way, people will have their opinion about such sensitive topics, it boils down to "to each their own." Whether you believe in one persons outlook or another, every one in entitled to their own opinion and as adults, people should respect that.

  14. When complicated issues are stated I feel that people have wordy responses because they feel they have to defend themselves and the issue. People are so offended by little things today that not only do people have to state they're case, but they have to back it up, and explain how they are not trying to offend someone in the process. Words are very easily misunderstood and misinterpreted. People are also very passionate about where they stand on issues and will fight hard to make sure their voice is heard.

A major issue today where society is very divided is gay rights. I am for them. What does it matter who someone wants to be with? They are doing no harm to society. It is an issue I could go on forever about. The opposing side, against rights, believe they are a harm to society and love should only be between male and female. This is also an issue that is very difficult to simplify because it is an issue I will help fight very hard for.
